Impulse Heat Sealer Blues

My heat sealer died yesterday and I am looking to buy a gently used one from a fellow soapmaker/B+B company.  I know I could throw down money on a new one, but honestly, I don't want to.  My money is allocated to other supplies and I am forced to be frugal at this time.

I don't want to buy one from Ebay because I don't necessarily trust everyone. I trust soapmakers more.  :)

So..... if you have one you'd like to sell, please let me know.  I need an 8 inch one so I can seal my soap cello bags.  They look like this:

I don't care what name brand it is, so this picture is just an example.

Thanks for hearing me out.  I try to make this blog for YOU, but I thought to myself, "why not utilize a large group of people who do what I do?"

A Comical Horror Short Film

My husband came across this and the whole things made me laugh out loud, so I thought you might smile, too, even though it has NOTHING to do with soap. If you have your computer on silent (which I often do) you might want to turn it up so you can appreciate the music.

The Kids Who Survived The 1930s, 40s, 50s, 60s & 70s

New York, circa 1940, © Helen Levitt. Courtesy Laurence Miller Gallery
and/or powerHouse Books.

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and questionable brakes.

Riding in the back of a pick-up truck on a warm day was a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose. Not from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually got the cooties.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. Why? Because we were always outside playing...that's why! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride them down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We did not have Play stations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms. WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms didn’t live in us forever.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we never put an eye out. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and talked to them. Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law back then!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

If YOU are one of them? CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?

This was sent to me in a different form. I edited it - it needed a little work, but it rang true at least to me, so I thought, perhaps, it would be interesting to some of you...in the mid 30s and older. :O)

OK Go

I love this video! It looks like this was done in one video take. In fact, they swear it was done in one fluid take (take 74)* These guys are funny. I saw another one of their videos a couple of years ago with them on treadmills.

Watch the whole thing if you have time and if you like dogs. Sorry the video is a little bigger than the width of my space. I couldn't figure out how to edit it.

You are probably better off watching it on YouTube:

Lazy Sunday Kittehs

My kitties

The Boss, Sippowitz (but we call him Kitty) at 16 yrs old. He was there when I was single, then through my wedding, when I had my dog, the coming of both babies, several moves from apartment to house to house to house and two states and here he lies. Alive and still sweet. Oh he looks old, but he keeps ticking. That nasty wet food is what gets him up every day ;) Gosh, he's older than my 13 year old daughter who stands at my height, knows more math than I remember and is beyond her years.

Motor, our fraidy cat man. Feisty, smart and most lovingly annoying at 6 yrs old. His stomach hangs so when he runs, his tummy swings from side to side and throws him off balance, his meow sounds more like a mowe and he won't stop moweing until he gets in or out of where he is. If he wants to get outside and we are watching tv, he'll hop up on the short bookcase right at the door, look at us and then find something on the bookcase to push off with his paw. He will look at us while he slowly pushes the object off. If you have seen Frisky Dingo, it is Killface's son, Simon, when he pushes his bowl of Capn' Scrump off the counter while his father is saying, "no Simon, stop that Simon!", while Simon is staring at him while continuing to slide the bowl right off the counter until the bowl falls and smashes to bits. Exactly.

Also he has the need to sleep directly on top of me when I lie on my side. He needs to teeter.

Our Youngest, Dot (4 years), is the most patient with any child and will never bite or scratch anyone but will always have a daily cat fight with that one neighbor cat next door. That is her only fault. Also, the top of her head smells like the faintest smelling perfume or baked goods depending on the day. Every day she smells amazing. She is dreamy.

My daughter took all of these pictures. Just giving the credit where credit deserves.

My First Etsy Treasury - Bits Of Sanity

I made my first Etsy treasury, which was incredibly time consuming. I had no time to do it and yet I was consumed. I was unbelievably determined to complete it and every item, every image had to be something that moved me. I couldn't settle on an image that "kind of" worked. It needed to click for me.

For those of you who don't know what a treasury is on Etsy, allow me to explain. I was able to create a template where I could choose "X" number of items/images that had a common theme in a mosaic and title it. Obviously these items all link back to their respective sales page. I titled my treasury "Bits Of Sanity" and chose each item that either brought me happiness, made me feel good physically or brought me peace somehow. Moments of brief sanity in my chaotic insane life that is my brain. So I share with you. I don't know if there is some goodness that comes out of leaving comments on the treasury. does anyone know?

Anyway... it brought me peace. I hope it brings a touch of it to you. :) Here it is. Click on it!

Lavola

If you are into discovering new music, you should check out Lavola, this super new, "unknown" band down here in West Palm Beach. My husband wrote an article for The New Times, but it was accidentally cut, so he self published it on his blog.

Go read it and get a free download of one of their songs. You might really like it.

I really do. And I feel so privileged because:

a) I know one of the guys (the one in the middle ) - Brian. So sweet!

and

b) I am going out tonight to see them live at their 2nd show ever :)

For Strange Women

This morning, I stumbled upon Etsy seller, For Strange Women, and I'm so glad I did. What fun it was to peruse her goods. I love the packaging... the containers, the colors and design of the labels. Each photograph in the shop is lit nicely with natural lighting that it was a pleasure to view every product. Tantalizing!

Crayons

Just a personal Halloween photo...

My daughter and her friend were crayons. My daughter is the "puke green" one (yes, she chose the name for her color). They made the costumes themselves. Oh, oh... didn't you think they bought them at Target? ;)

Uphill, Barefoot ... Both Ways

{this was an email sent to me, which I edited a little to add my own personal touches to and being that I fit into to the OVER 30 crowd, reluctantly and so obviously , I lay it out....}

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking 25 miles to school every morning....

Uphill... barefoot... BOTH ways….Yadda, yadda, yadda

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it.

But now that I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today.

You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a Utopia!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalogue.

There was no email. We had to actually write somebody a letter with a pen... Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take, like, a week to get there.

Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us.

There were no MP3' s or Napsters! If you wanted to steal music, you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning of the song. There were no CD players. We had tape decks in our car.

My grandpa had an 8-track. Oh yeah. Did you even ever see one of those? In A CAR?

We didn't have crap like Call Waiting. If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal.

And we didn't have Caller ID. When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was. It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know. You had to pick it up and take your chances.

We didn't have any fancy Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics. We had PONG. Pong rocked. Of course nowadays, if you put Pong on the tv, kids would look at you and be like, "what is this lame game?"

Then came Atari with games like Space Invaders and Asteroids. Your guy was a little square. There were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen. The game just kept getting faster and faster until you died!

You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on TV. You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel. NO REMOTES. A lot of TVs were still black and white. At least in my house.

There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-bastards!

And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove.

You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980 or before!

What do YOU remember??

Time Keeps On Ticking Into The Future

It is officially flying. What is it, Wednesday evening? It's garbage night, tomorrow's a half day for the kid's AGAIN, I have 9 loaves of soap on order which I can't make until tomorrow because I am waiting for my 50 lb. shipment of coconut oil. I also got a phone call from my mother tonight about Monday. Apparently it's another holiday... Columbus Day. Are you crapping me negative!? By golly I think it is official that I have lost all concept of space and time. I taught a private soaping lesson on Sunday and I worked on Monday so I didn't get any days off this week (normally I try to take at least Sunday to hang with my kids and Monday to catch up...use the day unofficially unless I have wholesale orders I ned to crank out.)

Lately I feel like my brain is swimming, I am having a hard time focusing, charging from one task to another getting so many things worked on but getting nothing completed.

Right now I am so sleepy I am actually light headed, so I should probably get up, wash up and put myself to sleep before I fall out of this bed and drop the laptop on the floor. I am going to share with you a secret I have that only my family knows: I sleep with a N*A*P pillow. I love it. It is brown and snuggly.

You can see it here it you want to. But that's not how I sleep with it. See? I fluttered to a weird insignificant topic!

A Javelin In The Brain Makes It Hard To Do ANYTHING

Yeah, really. That's what is feels like. Then there is also some pounding and some big metal band around my head squeezing, too.

Joy.

I have a theory why this migraine is the longest most heinous one I've had in ages. I know you are all like, yeah, Jo, tell me, I just have to know. On my birthday (July 11th), I got sick with stomach pains which is no stranger to this woman. The next day I was still in serious pain, finally went to the hospital and it turned out my Crohn's Disease was just having a major flare up. OK. They shot me with some crazy narcotic that almost made me throw up and made my legs feel detached, and shot me with steroids and told me I could go home.

Since then, I was put on prednisone (steroids) to keep the inflammation in my intestines nonexistant due to the crazy 3 location party (small intestine, large intestine and stomach) my body was throwing. Last week it was time to gradually taper off of the prednisone and finally, on Wednesday, I was finished. My migraine started on Wedneday night and has gotten progressively worse each day. My friend came up with a theory that maybe the prednisone was keeping all inflammtion in my body down and when my body had no more of it, my blood vessels in my brain flared up, inflamed and went full on big-time kaboom, to full capacity. Does that make sense?

There really is no need to go into the ins and outs of how I've been treating it other than I have been under the care of my neurologist , so don't worry, I am taking care of myself.

So I write this post to explain that I am not writing the soap reviews until my headache is completely gone, because I want to give it my full attention and not be fogged by my pain which is all I can see, really. I can look at soap porn and I might just post some of that today since I am pretty much stuck in this bedroom because the damn sunlight feels like skewers being poked in my eyeballs. Luckily I slept at my mother's last night and the kids are swimming in her pool and making a clubhouse with a tarp and some chairs and a floatie and are actually getting along. Dare I say it.

But I am in pain and feeling a little sorry for myself and wish my coffee was magic morphine or whatever that would take the pain away.... :(

Delirium & Co. - Scarlet Grapefruit Candle

Delirium and Co. Candle
Scarlet Grapefruit

Guest Review by Kim Pilla

Delirium’s Scarlet Grapefruit scent, to me, is masculine and evokes a vintage era. Can I start with the box? I loved the packaging of this candle. It is modern and the box is beautiful and reflective. Perfect for a gift for him or her. Open the box and I smell this citrus cologne, so delicate and beautiful. I don't know about you, but an overpowering scent for me can lead to a headache, and yet I do not want a wimpy scent, either. This soy blend candle is poured into a silver mirrored container. Once lit it throws a light and graceful blend of scents. It burns wonderfully with no black smoke or discoloration in sight. It is a slow burning candle, and I have enjoyed this scent throughout my home. It has evoked in me a silver screen.

Quite frankly dear, I feel like an old Hollywood movie star when burning Scarlet Grapefruit.
