Almond Layered Playdoh Smelling Soap

Not sure I love them.  In my mind I thought they'd be much cuter.... and smell not like almond scented playdoh.

My recipe:
Soybean Oil 16 oz
Coconut Oil (76 degrees) 12 oz
Cocoa Butter 4 oz.
Beeswax 1 oz
lye 4.8 oz (superfatted at 5%)
Almond fragrance
top layer added blue and green soap colors (why is it pink?)

I think it is time to spring for some new Lab Colors from Brambleberry.  The ones I have work in bath and body but not soap, even though they are called "Soap Colors".  Hmmph.

My next batch will be a fresh scent with a beige-brown hue.  A request from a loved one.

Hi Joanna,

I'm hardly an expert, but I've got some theories about what happened to your soap.

Your soap colors might have morphed if they were meant only for melt-and-pour soap. Or you just might not have used enough to overcome the soap's natural pinky-beige color.

I'm just starting to color my soaps. Getting just the right amount is tricky! I keep using too little. (I'm using oxides.)

The playdoh smell is probably from the soybean oil. I personally don't like the smell soy gives to CP soap. (Or the funky color, either.)

Hope that helps!

Barbara

I love that the top looks almost like a foamy creme topping! The scent might grown on you, as some of mine have for me. I too seem to be a bit color challenged... Have you picked out a fresh smelling fragrance? If not, and you are placing an order at Brambleberry, you might check out Sea Moss, love it out of the bottle for freshness (have yet to soap, but read tons of good stuff on the Teach Soap forum about it!).

I get the play dough smell every now and then. some have changed back to the scent they should be after many months.

I use the same exact recipe for every batch of soap I make so it has to do with the scent and the whole soap process I guess.

so don't give up on it exactly.

I've noticed that fragrances containing a component called coumarin can often cause almond, vanilla, and coconut fragrances to morph into play-doh. It's usually just temporary, though.

I like the look of your soaps. They remind me of delicate cream cakes one would serve with tea.

I thought the soaps looked a lot like heart-shaped cupcakes, actually. :) And I like the smell of Play-Doh.

They remind me of frosted cinnamon rolls. Mmmmm ... frosted ...

They look really cute, even if it wasn't what you were going for.

I used to eat my Play Doh, so ....

Coconut lotions and soaps are my absolute favorites. Reminds me of being on an island somewhere. Gorgeous!
