What's your favorite sandalwood oil?
As you know, I am making perfume oils, but I am ALWAYS blending and experimenting with new scents. I've never worked with sandalwood and I'd like to try. I don't want to use just any, either. I want to use a really good one.
Don't tell us which one you use if you just, eh, use one that just does the trick.
If you LOVE one, tell us.
It can be a fragrance oil or an essential oil. I'm just tired of purchasing samples all over the place and being disappointed. Let's put our resources together, for goodness sakes!

I get an FO blend from Southern Soapers called vanilla sandalwood, I LOVE this one.
I go ape-shit over sandalwood scent, just LUV it so much I hope to reincarnate as something sandalwoodsy next time around. My nose loves BB Sandalwood Vanilla, because it is more woodsy than sweet. The best sandalwood soap I've come across comes from Mysore in India (www.mysoresandal.co.in), the fragrance is just amazing! I've seen this soap it in the US, so you should be able to purchase a sample for sniffing. I have eo Mysore Sandalwood bought in India but it's so precious that I have not used it other than to unscrew/sniff/screw the bottle up again. Don't bother with SOS sandalwood fos. Racked up a bill there with 4 different sandelwood fo and all ended up smelling like the plastic bottle they came in. I have no idea how helpful this comment was...

Ahhh, Save On Scents. Never ordered from them. That's probably why I don't know them. And YES! I knew BB. I know a few...:)
Since Sandalwood is one of the endangered hardwoods I won't use the essential oil and like all the different breeds and place of orgins make each sandalwood eo smell different thus making then good for different things. BB's Indian Sandalwood, Sensual Sandalwood, and Sandalwood Vanilla, SS's Red Santal and Sandalwood Vanilla are some of my favorites. If you can't tell I really like sandalwood.
Very good point! I didn't know that they were a dwindling population... I guess I SHOULD know that.
OK, off to find an excellent FO.
But "Dreaming..." Of all of those, which is the best basic one for blending with sweets?

I second BB's Sensuous Sandalwood. Very close to true sandalwood.

For blending I use Cybilla's Indian Sandalwood it give it the good basic sweet, earthy, smooth note. Sensual Sandalwood and Red Sental are more woodsy. Sandalwood Vanilla is really just good on it own from either SS or BB the quality is about the same. I won't order from Sweekcakes, and thats all I'll say about that.
I have Australian Sandalwood essential oil in my stash. (I paid $170 for 100ml) I'm a bit like Cocobong, I mainly use it to sniff occasionally and I evaluate Sandalwood fragrance oils against it. I like the fact that it's grown and harvested sustainably in Australia.
I really like Sensuous Sandalwood and my blind swirled soap with Vanilla FO, Sandalwood EO and FO and Patchouli EO is our best seller. I add 5ml of Australian Sandalwood to the Brambleberry Fragrance Oils to arrive at a very popular scent but I'd be the first to agree that I could leave the essential oil out and it wouldn't make a big difference.
I'm another BIG fan of BB's Sensous Sandalwood. SS's Sandalwood Vanilla is also lovely. I also use SS's Aromatic Sandalwood to blend with orange (just packaged some today, in fact).
I purchased two very different sandalwood fragrance oils from The Scent Works… Imperial Sandalwood and Vanilla Sandalwood - both are outstanding. I have not soaped either yet, but from what I’ve read, they behave very well. I’ve been playing with both in various blends with other oils, but they definitely would be great alone… each has a lot of depth.
The sandelwoof FO from Gracefruit is very close to real sandelwood. I really like it mixed up with rose fo and a tiny bit vanilla fo
