I read all the articles and they all tell me I put too much lye in the batch, which I didn't, but okay, whatever. I was going to rebatch the brittle nasties, but I think I'll toss them. They'll just turn gray and get ugly and I am tired of them already. I don't even like the way they smell.
So it's important to share the crap mistakes along with the pretty stuff. I learn from others when they make mistakes and hopefully you can learn from mine, even though I won't admit to this one.
Grate it, add washing soda and borax, and use it in the laundry.
ReplyDeleteTo my (perhaps untrained) eyes, they're still very lovely soaps. Sorry they were such a bummer batch. There's got to be one every once in a while, I guess. We love you anyway. :)
ReplyDeleteSorry about the bummer batch Joanna. You know if you used too much lye or not and I believe your right. I've had mishaps in the past and "troubleshooting" articles, books, whatever - tell u it is one thing when u as the creator you know isn't correct.
ReplyDeleteI think there are some mystery flops... maybe a scientist can explain but like you said... whatever - from where I'm sitting your soap looks great. Just toss it in the "oh well" pile and move on to the next batch :)

I agree. They "look" good enough to eat.
ReplyDeleteI just had a batch that I had to cook twice! I was doing CP but it started to rice so I poured it out of the mold and into the pot and cooked it over a pan of water. It had some oil on top a couple days later so I chunked it up and cooked it again. This time it took but it has holes in it because it was so stiff when I put it in the mold.
yeah, these look pretty good to me. i like the laundry soap idea though. i'm thinking of doing that with a couple of my funky batches.

ReplyDeleteCould it be that you used to much hard oils? My soap looks like that when I used to much coconut and palm oil. But instead of my 'ugly'soap yours look like cake!
ReplyDeleteSorry your soap flopped. It looks like it would have been gorgeous. Soap Gremlins get us all sooner or later. Just remember what a great ratio of glorious vs. crumby you have! Glorious wins, hands down.

The same thing happened to 2 weeks ago, and this is what I did:
I've read somewhere that loss of heat could also be the cause to brittle soap, so when the first cut appeared to be brittle, I stopped cutting it and sent the whole thing right back to the oven and "baked" at 200F for 2 hours. Let it rest for another day and cut again -- guess what? No more brittle soap!
save it till april fools! you could trick someone telling them it's chocolate ;)
