Mold: m-w.com definition 2: the frame on or around which an object is constructed 3 a: a cavity in which a substance is shaped: as (1): a matrix for casting metal (2): a form in which food is given a decorative shape b: a molded object
A mold can be made of anything with sides and a bottom...and slightly flexible or with movable sides. My first batch of soap was in a silicone pan, the second batch I used a sturdy Batmobile box that housed a very fancy collectible Batmobile (collectible for a seven year old? Nope. Just a very heavy metal car that has tons of cool detail and fun to smash into my new baseboards-ouch!)
Anything really can be used: tupperware, shoe boxes, Pringles cans, lucite (more on this later...), silicone muffin pans, REAL wooden break-away soap molds, stainless steel, plastic...anything, really, except for aluminum.
There are so many interesting choices, but if one wants to make a consistantly uniform soap bar, for selling, than an actual soap mold may be in order...
What do you use?
My husband bought me wood molds on ebay years ago. They make a perfect size bar. I just wish I didn't have to fuss with lining them every time I need to use them. I did find linerless molds that are exactly like mine on ebay...soooo tempting = )

My husband has made me 6 molds so far, two 1#'s, two 2#'s, and two 3#'s. Eventually he will build a non log one for me. I too hate to line the molds, but until he can cut my lining (1/8" HDPE sheet) into the appropriate sized pieces, I will continue to line.
ReplyDeleteI have used molds from Brambleberry, Creekside, heavy box lids, flexible, plastic, etc... and too would love to find a great mold that wouldn't need to be lined. Lining a soap mold is the worst thing about soap making... I haven't purchased a large silicone mold yet, but am thinking about it for the future.
ReplyDeleteAnd oh- one of my sons has built me several molds that work well.
Creekside molds came with a liner in place (nice), and directions, etc...
I am crazy about silicone molds!! I just got two of the square ones from AM at Bramble Berry and I love them!
ReplyDeleteI also have a silicone bundt pan that Betty Crocker will never know!!
I adore Creekside molds as well, although I agree with the girls that lining them is a pain!
I've used tupperware and another 'leftover' container. I was looking at silicone molds today and wondering if I could use them. I guess now I know.
ReplyDeleteI use two wooden molds. One for 24ozs of soap and the other for 48ozs of soap. I will have to look into the silicon molds.
